Empowerment Through Awareness
This session designed for young girls to navigate the complex world of social media. Led by experienced mentors, this session sheds light on the potential pitfalls of social media, empowering participants to recognize and mitigate harmful effects such as cyberbullying, unrealistic beauty standards, and digital addiction. Through interactive discussions and real-life examples, girls learn to foster healthy online habits, build resilience, and prioritize their mental and emotional well-being in the digital age. This session equips them with the tools and knowledge needed to navigate social media platforms confidently and responsibly.
Building Kindness - Preventing Bullying
RCPD Officer Bunnell will share her story about being bullied as a child. She will help students learn about what bullying is, how to recognize it, and most importantly, how to prevent it. Through age-appropriate discussions attendees will explore different types of bullying such as teasing, exclusion, and cyberbullying, while understanding the impact these behaviors have on others.
Mini Portrait Session
Each participant will have their own mini-portrait session. Girls are encouraged to bring something to include that represents who they are, or an outfit that makes them feel good. Karen will talk with you before the event to brainstorm some ideas of what each participant would like to do. If they’re coming with a friend or sibling we can photograph them together.
Empowering and Encouraging Girls
Andrews and Associates, Karen Schroeder Photography and Unbound Recovery hosted our third annual empowerment fundraising event on July 20, 2024. This year’s event raised $2000 for The Boys and Girls Club of Manhattan.
The Who I Am event is for girls age 9-12 and features activities to boost their self-esteem and sense of belonging.
Session topics for the day included gratitude journaling, navigating social media use, intro to self defense and nutrition. In addition, they had a mini portrait session.
Each participant received a bag of fun items including a T-shirt, journal, and more! They all will receive a metal bag tag with their portrait from the event.
Sessions Offered at the 2024 Who I Am Event
Gratitude Journaling
This year, our Gratitude Journaling session will be a full group activity, first thing in the morning. This will allow the girls to use their journals throughout the day! During this session, the girls will focus on gratitude and positivity.
Breakout Sessions
Introduction to Self-defense
Unlike most self-defense systems that rely heavily on strength, speed, and coordination, the techniques in the Women Empowered program employ leverage, technique, and timing, so anyone, regardless of age or athletic ability, can learn and apply the techniques with ease. Mario Lund and Yvonne Lawton with Adventure Jiu-jitsu will give an overview of the Women Empowered program and share some basic self-defense techniques.
Fuel Your Body, Empower Your Mind
This session is tailored for young girls seeking to foster a positive relationship with food and their bodies. Led by nutrition experts and body-positive advocates, this session delves into the principles of intuitive eating, encouraging participants to listen to their bodies and honor their hunger cues. Through interactive activities and discussions, girls learn to recognize and challenge harmful messages perpetuated by diet culture, embracing a holistic approach to nutrition that prioritizes health and well-being over restrictive eating habits. By empowering girls to nourish themselves mindfully and reject societal pressures, this session fosters body acceptance and self-confidence.
